Mayes is Artistic Director & Founder of POPS OF COLOR, the new resident Pops orchestra of The Town Hall in New York City, composed entirely of musicians of color & focusing exclusively in repertoire artists of color have contributed to popular music. Additionally, Mayes is Music Supervisor & Co-Orchestrator of ALI: The Musical, based on Muhammad Ali, composed by conductor Teddy Abrams & rap icon Q-Tip. His new opera, Aportia Chryptych: A Black Opera for Portia White, made its World Premiere with the Canadian Opera Company in June 2024.
